The large 3W resistors can get considerably hot (65 to 70°C). A few people recommended leaving a small gap between their base and the PCB surface for better air flow as well as preventing long term damage to the PCB. This could be accomplished by putting a toothpick temporarily between the resistor and the PCB while soldering (and then removing it, of course!).
